It might also be worth pointing out that the spindle dimension is 5/16" square -- any kind of square stock would work.  My local hardware store failed to have any kind of square metal stock in that size, so I wondered whether there might be plexiglass in that thickness, from which a strip could be cut.  Granted, it would not be as durable as metal, but it would be exactly square in cross-section, and it would be more durable than wood.
